The National Reading Panel Report (NRPR) is a publication that provides teaching advice for educators in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, oral reading fluency, comprehension strategies, and vocabulary. Through this report, scientific research is presented identifying how much, how often, and what kind of instruction our students need in these "Big 5" areas of literacy identified by the National Reading Council (NRC).
According to the NRPR, vocabulary instruction in all forms aids reading achievement. Vocabulary instruction comes in two forms, explicit and implicit.
Explicit instruction:
- teaching students the meanings of words
- teaching students how to find meanings of words from context
- teaching students the meanings of word roots and affixes
